Room 4 fourth graders have kicked off their 2016-2017 school year and are doing a great job adjusting here at Memorial School. We have been working on our Core Ethical Values and practicing them everyday. Students are now in a groove with Reader's Workshop and have improved their stamina to read intensely and be fully engaged in their reading. They are applying strategies to grow as readers through envisioning and synthesizing. We are using our place value knowledge to help us shift into various multiplication strategies with larger numbers. Students enjoyed a field trip to Portland Case Quarry to explore the different types of rocks were learned about in our Rock Cycle Unit. Recently we started learning about the different regions of the United States and will continue to do so over the course of the next few weeks. We are working hard but having a lot of fun in the process!

This year is one of the best years. Between switching classes and all of the hands on activities we get to do. We have learned about the eye and how it works as well as light. We have done some pretty awesome things in math too. We have been working on multiplication and division. Some strategies are the T-chart and the area model. We have also gotten to use the smart board to play some pretty cool games that will help us with our math skills. The kids in our class really liked the new thing we did in social studies it is called Kahoot. It is a little voting website where it asks you a question like "Do you think the war was worth fighting for?" and we would get to pick yes,no or maybe. And that would start a class discussion. I think the class is really liking fifth grade.
This school year has started off really nice! We get to learn about the most amazing things in all of the subjects and all of us are having a blast! In Social Studies, Miss. Kling separated us into different groups and we got to make a fifty first state and apply the themes of geography. Next, we are going to learn about government! We also get to start doing current events! In math, we are learning about multiplying two digit by two digit numbers using all different ways of multiplication. In science, we got to electrocute a pickle to see what would happen to it. We made a prediction and got to see if it was right or wrong. We are also learning about the scientific method and all of its words definitions. As you can see... We are already having a great year!
In science we have been collecting research for how a tennis ball, super ball, ping pong ball, and golf ball on how they are made and how high they bounce. When we are done with our research we are going to do our own experiment on how high each ball can bounce.
Recently our class has been working on decimals, and the way we started was by adding. As we moved forward went moved on to subtracting, and now our progress has brought us to dividing. We work from our Go Math books and a sheet of paper for our strategy of how we're going to solve the problem. We have been working on out of our books independently, and working together as a class to discuss the strategy and ask any questions. Soon we will be working on 2 digit divisors and learning more strategies.
Written by, Francesco M In class we have been learning about the phases of the moon. We also fill out a moon chart with labels and drawings of the moon. Every night we observe the moon and its phases. But if we miss or don't see the moon we go on a website called:
www.briancasey.org/artifacts/astro/moon.cgi Some phases of the moon are new moon, full moon, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, waning crescent, waxing crescent, first quarter, and last quarter. In math we have been comparing decimals and ordering from least to greatest and greatest to least. An example of ordering decimals from greatest to least is, 4.803; 4.3; 4.08; 4.038. We use the stacking strategy to compare place value position to help us figure out the correct order. One example of comparing: 8.72 = 8.720. This problem is equal because they try to trick you by adding the zero to the second number but if you cover the zero with your finger then it looks like the same number.
For the past weeks we have been learning the major and small battles of the Revolutionary War. Along with what were learning in social studies, in English we are writing a paper on battles and heroes . One example of a hero is Deborah Sampson. Deborah Sampson dressed up as a man just to fight for General George Washington in the Revolutionary War. Another example of a hero is James Armistead. James was an enslaved African American spy who worked for the Continental Army {Americans}. One example of a battle is the battle of Long Island. The British won and the Americans suffered great losses. About two days ago we were finishing up the last major battle of the Revolutionary War {The battle of Yorktown}.
Every Thursday we have Mrs. Mariani teach us important reading skills. This week we learned about Context Clues. There are 5 common context clues and they are definition, synonym, antonym, example, and inference. We have been using stickies to help us identify words we may not know or words that give meaning to the text. We use the different types of context clues to help us figure out the meaning of a word and/or how it shows meaning to the text.
Today we celebrated the hour of code using the Chrome Books. Coding is basically knowing how to computer program. Coding allows you to type in certain commands causing things to happen. Many useful websites can be used to learn how to code . Some of the favorite websites are code, scratch and pencilcode. Frozen {much different than you think}, Flappy bird, and Angry birds are some of the popular coding activities within the websites just mentioned. Everyone is have alot of fun, while at the same time learning math and writing skills. We love to code!
